Awesome work on the 1911. I don’t know how to get rid of the italics. So what made you decide to build it? I will be going the same route as you did with a T.M. reciever. You should totally do an ar-15 build too. Just be sure to get a receiver that is already parkerized. Paint chips off way to easily. What dimensions did you use for the rails? Your help will be appreciated.
Hey Philip, thanks! Pretty much decided to build the 1911 since it came out from TM and I’ve already done a couple 80% ar-15’s. The 1911 rails I just cut .105″ from the top using a 3/32 keyseat cutter and filed down to size. Good luck on your build!
I have a question on your milling steps you used with the drilling machine. Many state that with the drilling it’s only matter of time before the arbor gets loose and comes out. Secondly, the 18mm 4-flute ball end mill bit shows a shank size of 18mm as well; how did you get it to work with the drill press you linked when the chuck only goes up to 5/8″ on that model? Did you wind up switching out the chuck and finding a larger one to work?
Hi, thanks for your question. It was walking a lot with my end mill so it’s very possible that others experienced it coming loose. However, I didn’t find mine coming loose. Regarding the chuck, I might have had an older model with a much larger chuck since I never replaced the chuck and it fit the 18mm shank size of the end mill.
Looks real nice!!
Not to be nosey but how much did you wrap up in this build. I’m trying to decide if this a direction I would like to go. I’ve see this fixturing from Matrix Precision Parts and it looks like a nice and easy route to go using a drill press. Thoughts?
Thanks
No problem! It took a little over 1k with the equipment (not including drill press) and top end parts. I took a look at the Matrix jig and it looks like it could make the difficult cuts a lot more doable. My thought is that it is a little expensive if you’re only doing one. Let me know how it goes if you decide to go with it.
thanks eric, actually this is so very helpful, what a cool guy you are for sharing
your experiences. Small world I think I watched your ruby training on you tube, small world !
